Why a Balboa Park Photoshoot is Perfect for your Engagement
Balboa Park has always been one of the most popular destinations to visit when you’re in San Diego. There’s this charm about it that made me fall in love with it when I first visited 15 years ago. For locals, it’s a great stroll to hangout or to simply visit the free museums. For couples, this is a great spot for a first date or an engagement photoshoot. The iconic architecture, gardens, and views are so unique! You really cannot find anything like it in Southern California. It’s such a big space that it would usually take me 1-2 hours just for a Balboa Park Photoshoot. Today, I’ll be sharing Balboa Park Photoshoot so you can be inspired and get a sense of what the park feels like before checking it out in-person.
Balboa Park – San Diego
Tips for Planning your Engagement Photos at Balboa Park
Best Time: Any time during the day when there’s natural light. Most couples prefer golden hour, when the light is glowing. If you’re aiming for golden hour, then I would start the photoshoot about 1 to 1.5 hours before sunset. Balboa Park is also great in the morning either on a weekday or weekend as well. Just be sure to check if there are any events happening in the park before you schedule a photoshoot.
Best Day: Weekdays are best for an engagement photoshoot because it will be less crowded, especially in the morning around 9:00 am.
Recommended Arrival Time: Always plan to arrive about 30+ minutes early because parking spaces can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during major events like December Nights.
Parking Fee: Parking fees at Balboa Park used to be free until 2026. Yes, it used to be free, but sadly the city of San Diego decided to impose parking fees and that has caused a lot of issues amongst San Diego residents that visit the park regularly.
San Diego Residents: To break it down, if you’re a San Diego resident, you may be able to get free parking if you verify in advance that you’re a San Diego resident. To get verified, you must register in advance and provide proof of residency via the online portal: San Diego Permit Portal. Obtaining a permit does not guarantee a parking space and is based on first-come, first-serve. With this permit, you do get free parking in a Level 2 parking lot and a resident rate will be applied for the more popular parking lots (Level 1).
Non-residents:
Level 1 Parking Lots:
Verified Resident Rate ($5 for up to 4 hours and $8 full day)
Nonresident Rate ($10 for up to 4 hours and $16 full day)
Level 2 Parking Lots:
Verified Resident Rate (Free)
Nonresident Rate ($10/day)
Level 3 Parking Lots:
Verified Resident Rate (Free)
Nonresident Rate (First 3 hours are free and $10 full day)
Where do you pay for the parking fees?
There will be meter kiosks in each lot.
Or you can download the app and pay through your phone (which is helpful cause you can add on hours from your phone or just use the app to monitor the time)

What to Wear for your Balboa Park Engagement Photos
I always recommend my couples to coordinate colors and avoid matching. I highly recommend the ladies to pick 2-3 colors for their outfit, then have the guys wear outfits with those 2-3 colors. Easy right? There’s more to it and here’s why.
I once had a couple follow the exact same color coordination rule above, except the guy showed up in shorts and t-shirts, while the girl wore a beautiful dress.
I would avoid wearing matching clothes, for very obvious reasons or anything with distracting patterns or logos.
Working with a San Diego Engagement Photographer at Balboa Park
Recommendations:
Work with someone that is familiar with your preferred location or as long as he or she scouts the location(s) in advance.
Choose a photographer that’s great with communication. I find this really important because engagement photos are an investment and you want to make sure they understand your vision and are easily accessible when you have questions.
In California, there are peak wedding seasons (Spring and Fall). I highly recommend booking your engagement photographer at least 6 months in advance just in case or even earlier, especially if you need these images to print save the dates.
Every photographer has their own editing style and you cannot request them to edit a specific way. This is out of their comfort zone; therefore, please review your photographer’s portfolio before reserving a session with them.
An engagement session is more relaxed and gives you a great idea of how your photographer is before the Wedding Day.
Balboa Park is one of San Diego’s most iconic locations and I’d love to photograph you there. To start planning your session, please reach out and make it happen.
I developed a beautiful vision of weddings since childhood. This vision was inspired and nurtured from my childhood experience singing for weddings in the Vietnamese children's choir. Those weekends were the best memories of my childhood and I always made sure those important dates were on my calendar. Fast forward to present day, I get to photograph couples on their wedding day and there is nothing more rewarding than delivering a gallery full of love, laughter, and precious memories for future generations to relive and celebrate.
